(ROSENBERG) – Precinct 4 Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy has announced the anticipated reopening of Hwy 90A and Lane Drive in early 2024 following a construction delay in the planned expansion of Hwy 90A by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The decision to restore the intersection to its previ-ous configuration has been made to ensure safe traffic flow while TxDOT addresses unforeseen challenges in the original design and construction process for the intersection, sccorfing to representatives of McCoy’s office.
According to TxDOT, the traffic signals at the intersection are being programmed for the anticipated reopening. Once the signals are in place, traffic barrels and construction barriers will be removed, and the road will be re-striped to allow usage of the intersection once again.
“This intersection has been a headache and concern for residents in the area for far too long,” said McCoy. “We have been discussing this intersection with TxDOT since coming to office this year and I am thrilled that we have come together to address this major regional safety concern.”
The Hwy 90A intersection at Lane Drive is slated by TxDOT to be converted to an overpass over the Union Pacific railroad that currently crosses over 90A at the Oak Bend Medical Center’s Jackson Street location. Utility and design conflicts have caused significant delays, which has now required TxDOT to cancel the existing contract and rebid the project for construction.
Even under the most optimistic timeframe it is unlikely for construction to resume until early 2025, spurring McCoy, along with Rosenberg and Richmond city leaders, to urge TxDOT to reopen the intersection in the meantime.
“We are thankful for TxDOT’s partnership in hearing the community’s concern and responding as swiftly as possible,” said McCoy.
TxDOT has stated the intersection is likely to reopen in its original configuration in early 2024.
