(KATY ISD) - Katy ISD has partnered with Construction Career Collaborative (C3) to present the #SHEbuildsHouston event aimed at introducing young women to the many career opportunities available in the construction industry. The event will take place at the Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center.
This first-of-its-kind event at Katy ISD will consist of more than 45 vendors that will provide students hands-on experiences with different types of tools and trades, as well as an opportunity to hear the motivational testimony of women currently in the industry, some of whom have faced challenges and have seen the significant strides of females in the construction industry.
“As the industry continues to grow, there has been a significant change in the number of women in this workforce due to the demand for skilled labor and the push for gender equality,” said Jeannie Knierim, Director of Career and Technical Education at Katy ISD. “The #SHEbuildsHouston event allows our young Katy ISD women to see different trades available and begin to explore a career opportunity in this field,” added Knierim.
“#SHEbuildsHouston began in 2019 with the idea of spreading the message about different career opportunities available for women in the construction industry, as many construction firms are seeking to diversify. The event has been a success in Aldine ISD, Alief ISD, Spring Branch ISD and now in Katy ISD with over 1,500 young women currently registered to attend the event this Tuesday,” said Diane Aguilar, marketing director at C3.
