FBISD Board Vice President Dr. Shirley Rose-Gilliam, Board Member Sonya Jones, Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith, Board Member Rick Garcia, Board President Judy Dae, Board Member Angie Hanan, and Board Member Kristen Davison Malone

The board vote was followed by a reception where Smith had a chance to meet and greet staff, parents, students and community members at the James Reese Career and Technical Center.

“Thank you for your confidence, your faith and your trust,” Smith said. “I am committed to upholding the high standards you have set for me. I look forward to locking arms with you and moving forward.”

Smith’s first official day will be Jan. 22.

“Two facts I want to share, Dr. Smith has been a superintendent for 12 years and he was the Region 10 Superintendent of the Year in 2020,” FBISD Board President Judy Dae said. “I am looking forward to working with him.”

Smith has already hit the ground running by meeting with the district’s executive leadership team, collaborating with board members and completing onboarding requirements.

His selection marks a return to FBISD where he previously served for six years as an executive principal and an assistant superintendent.

“To staff, I’m looking forward to working with you,” Smith said. “You are top notch. It’s all about the students and we are committed to doing our best for them. Every day, that’s what you’re going to get from me.”

Smith has served as superintendent for two Texas school districts – Duncanville ISD from 2016 until now and Marshal ISD from 2012 to 2016.

Several staff members and representatives from Duncanville ISD attended the event.

Smith began his career in education as a classroom teacher and coach before advancing to campus and district leadership roles. He has served in public education for three decades and has received numerous accolades for exceptional leadership.

Smith earned his doctorate at the University of Houston in Administration and Supervision. He earned his master’s degree at Prairie View A&M University also in Administration and Supervision, and he earned his bachelor’s degree at Texas Southern University in Human Performance.

Texas state law requires school districts to implement a 21-day waiting period before an official contract is offered to superintendents. Jan. 8, 2024, marked the fulfillment of the waiting period for Smith.
