(FORT BEND ISD) – Students in the Fort Bend ISD’s Board Leadership Program recently took a trip to the Texas Capitol during the state’s 88th Legislative Session.
Leadership 101, comprised of high school juniors, spends the year learning about public service and volunteerism in the County. Leadership 102 students, those in their senior year, are partnered with local non-profit organizations and spend their year working on a capstone project to showcase what they’ve learned. The organizations include Parks Youth Ranch, Fort Bend Women’s Center, Fort Bend Regional Council, Boys and Girls Club, Child Advocates of Fort Bend and the Fort Bend Rainbow Room.
The students were joined by several members of the FBISD Board of Trustees including President Kristen Davison Malone, Vice President Judy Dae, Secretary Dr. Shirley Rose-Gilliam, Rick Garcia, David Hamilton and Angie Hanan.
The students were able to meet with several state representatives and senators to advocate for the causes and non-profit organizations with which they work. They met with the following leaders:
Rep. Jacey Jetton, District 26
Rep. Stan Kitzman, District 85
Rep. Ron Reynolds, District 27
Senator Joan Huffman, District 17
Senator Borris Miles, District 13
“This leadership experience provided our young leaders an opportunity to sit down with legislators and advocate for causes near and dear to their hearts,” said FBISD Leadership Coordinator Michael Madden. “Having the opportunity to have their voices heard by those who govern at the state level is an experience they may remember for a lifetime.”
